Pure and Simple

We are driven to ensure that the process of producing each jar of mānuka honey is as simple and pure as possible, to play our part in helping to preserve our natural environment. We look for ways to give back to our natural environment whenever we can.

What exactly is Mānuka Honey?

Mānuka honey is a completely natural product created by honey bees, which is drawn specifically from the nectar of the mānuka flower (botanical name: Leptospermum scoparium). The mānuka flower grows on mānuka shrubs, also known as tea tree. These small, delicate flowers can be deep pink or white in color.

The nectar from the mānuka flower is incredibly special as it produces a unique synergistic “phytochemical activity”. This can only be found in genuine or authentic mānuka honey and offers special benefits to the honey. This phytochemical activity has been identified as methylglyoxal (MG), which is known to work in synergy with the body when consumed, while benefiting overall well-being.

The MG activity level naturally present in this honey accumulates with time- just like wine it gets better with age! When our honey is packaged for sale, it is first tested for quality and safety purposes, graded and certified and finally given its unique MG grading (located on the top right hand side of the jar). The phytochemical reading given to the honey (such as MG250 or MG400) depends on how long the honey has been stored and how much the activity level has increased.

What makes this process even more intriguing and astounding is that the activity level continues to grow even while the honey is simply sitting in the jar after it is packed- it just keeps getting better!

Uses of Mānuka honey

At Simply Honey we use mānuka honey on a daily base in a number of ways. However, our top use for this premium product is as a gift for our family and friends, as we believe a jar of liquid gold offers incredible value and prestige and is a gift that keeps on giving. Produced by honey bees, mānuka honey represents purity and goodness and has multiple benefits for the body

  1. Human use of honey has been traced back to some 8000 years ago as depicted by Stone Age paintings. The ancient Egyptians, Assyrians, Chinese, Greeks and Romans employed honey for treating wounds and to heal diseases of the gut. Ancient Indian medicine, known as Ayurveda, holds honey in high esteem as a cure for common illnesses such as coughs and colds, indigestion, skin blemishes and more.

  2. The unique sweet, earthy, and herbaceous taste of mānuka honey, along with it’s rich creamy texture makes it an indispensable ingredient for use in baking or cooking. It is also used as a healthier option to refined sugar for cooking. It can be enjoyed with herbal teas, and other hot drinks.

  3. The same benefits that mānuka honey offers humans can apply to animals. Anecdotal evidence suggests that mānuka honey can offer the same antibiotic and antiseptic treatment of common ailments in animals.

The Simply Honey Story

I landed on the shores of this wonderful country just twelve years ago- although it feels as though we have been here our whole lives. We raised our family here and have not once had any regrets about making this big move from our home town in India. This land has given us everything we hoped for – peace, quiet, and wonderful opportunities.

A drive through the country side, even today, never fails to amaze me – the unique flora and fauna, the lush green tapestry, the endless skylines, the rainbows and clear blue sky. There truly is something magical about the air here.

Simply Honey stemmed from my desire to take something genuinely kiwiana to my friends and family back home in India when visiting. I had tried all sorts of different gifts but couldn’t quite pin down the perfect kiwi present for our loved ones to enjoy. Chocolates – well, they appealed to kids but were not so popular with Uncles and Aunts. Wine appealed to our Uncles, but

then our Aunties weren’t left with any and dear Grandma would feel left out! Paua shells and jewellery appealed to my sister and didn’t mean much to Dad. Finding the ‘right’ gift was always a predicament as I struggled to source something that would appeal to all of my family members (and reduce my shopping woes)

I have always enjoyed premium New Zealand mānuka honey, and my mother would often ask me to bring her a jar on visits back to India. And suddenly it clicked. Mānuka honey was the perfect gift to take home as it could be enjoyed by all of the family regardless of age, or interest. It is delicious, of exceptional quality and can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. And of course, if you see the goodness in something, why wouldn’t you share it with the world? There started my journey and here I am today, proudly distributing Simply Honey around the world for everyone to enjoy. I truly believe you will enjoy this product as much as my family does.

Why we chose the MG Rating on our labels

The Ministry of Primary Industries has identified Methylglyoxal (MG or MGO) as an ingredient that can be identified in the labelling and marketing of New Zealand mānuka honey, expressed as a minimum number of mg/kg. Scientific evidence has confirmed Methylglyoxal as being a key compound that occurs naturally in mānuka honey, giving consumers reassurance that this is an authentic natural product To instantly differentiate genuine authentic mānuka honey on the market from those that do not have this vital key component. To comply with New Zealand's Mānuka Labelling Guidelines which clearly state that MG is the method of accepted labelling for genuine authentic mānuka honey.
